Amazon Web Services

The 7 Rs of cloud migration

Definition

A framework of strategies for migrating workloads to AWS: Retire (decommission), Retain (keep on-premises), Relocate (move without changes, e.g. VMware Cloud on AWS), Rehost (lift-and-shift), Repurchase (switch to SaaS), Replatform (targeted optimizations), and Refactor/Re-architect (cloud-native redesign).

Exam context

A very common SAP-C02 question: given a business scenario, identify which "R" applies and which AWS tool supports it (MGN for Rehost, DMS + Elastic Beanstalk for Replatform, Lambda/ECS for Refactor). Refactor delivers the greatest cloud benefit but requires the most effort.
