Foundation model

Definition

Large-scale AI model, pretrained on huge volumes of diverse data, that can be adapted to multiple downstream tasks (text, image, code) through prompting, fine-tuning, or RAG, without needing to be trained from scratch for each use case.

Exam context

A core concept for both AIF-C01 and GENAI-L. On AWS you access foundation models via Amazon Bedrock; on Google Cloud, via Vertex AI and Model Garden (Gemini, Gemma, third-party models). Difference from LLM: every LLM is a foundation model, but a foundation model can also be multimodal or image-based (not just text).
