How to pass the AWS Cloud Practitioner in 30 days (step-by-step guide)
A realistic, proven study plan to pass the CLF-C02 in a month, with free resources, exam tips, and the topics where people fail the most.
The AWS Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) is the entry certification to the Amazon Web Services ecosystem. In 30 days, with 1–1.5 hours of study a day, it's entirely possible to pass it on your first attempt.
This guide gives you a week-by-week plan, the resources that actually work, and the topics where people fail the most.
Exam facts: 65 questions in 90 minutes, a price of USD 100, a minimum passing score of 700/1000, and 3 years of validity.
What does the CLF-C02 measure?
The exam assesses four domains:
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Cloud concepts | 24% |
| Security and compliance | 30% |
| Cloud technology and services | 34% |
| Billing, pricing, and support | 12% |
Important note: the security domain weighs 30% — more than in any other fundamentals certification from the major cloud providers. Many people underestimate it and fail because of it.
30-day plan
Week 1 — Cloud concepts and the shared responsibility model
Goals:
- ▸Understand the service models: IaaS, PaaS, SaaS
- ▸Understand AWS's shared responsibility model (what AWS protects vs what the customer protects)
- ▸Learn the benefits of the cloud according to AWS: elasticity, agility, economies of scale, etc.
Daily task: 1 AWS Skill Builder module + 10 practice questions
The shared responsibility model is a topic that shows up on almost every exam. Memorize this rule: AWS is responsible for security of the cloud; the customer is responsible for security in the cloud.
Week 2 — AWS's main services
Goals:
- ▸Know the most important services by category:
You don't need to know how to configure them — you need to know what each one is for and in which scenario to use it.
Daily task: study 3–4 new services + 15 practice questions on services
Week 3 — Security, identity, and compliance
This is the most important week, because the security domain weighs 30%.
Goals:
- ▸IAM in depth: users, groups, roles, and policies
- ▸The principle of least privilege
- ▸MFA (multi-factor authentication) on AWS
- ▸AWS Organizations and account control
- ▸Security services: CloudTrail, Config, Security Hub, Macie
- ▸Compliance frameworks: GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2 in the context of AWS
Daily task: 1 security module + 15 security practice questions
💡 On the exam you'll see questions like "which service would you use to audit who accessed which resource?" The answer is CloudTrail. "Which service detects threats automatically?" GuardDuty. Learn these scenario patterns.
Week 4 — Billing, pricing, support, and practice exams
Goals:
- ▸Understand AWS pricing models: pay-as-you-go, Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, Spot Instances
- ▸AWS Free Tier: new accounts get up to USD 200 in credits with a 6-month free plan, in addition to the always-free services
- ▸Cost management tools: AWS Cost Explorer, AWS Budgets, Cost and Usage Report
- ▸AWS support plans and their differences (see below: AWS is changing its plan lineup)
- ▸Take 3 full 65-question practice exams under real conditions
Criterion for booking the exam: a consistent score of 75%+ on practice exams.
The topics where people fail the most
1. The shared responsibility model The most classic exam question: "What is the customer responsible for on AWS?" The right answer almost always involves data, applications, access management, and the operating system of EC2 instances.
2. Reserved Instances vs Savings Plans vs Spot
- ▸On-Demand: pay by the hour, with no commitments
- ▸Reserved Instances: a 1–3 year commitment, discounts of up to 72%
- ▸Savings Plans: similar to Reserved but more flexible
- ▸Spot Instances: AWS's spare capacity, up to 90% off, but they can be interrupted
3. Support plans The exam gives you a scenario and asks which support plan that company needs. The classic logic: Basic (free, documentation and forums), Developer (technical support by email during business hours), Business (24/7 support by chat and phone), Enterprise (dedicated Technical Account Manager).
Watch out for an announced change: AWS is retiring the Developer, Business, and Enterprise On-Ramp plans on January 1, 2027. Developer and Business are being replaced by Business Support+, and Enterprise On-Ramp moves to Enterprise Support. Since the exam is updated with a delay, learn both sets of names and focus on the logic: the more business-critical the workload, the more coverage and dedicated attention.
4. High availability vs fault tolerance High availability = the system recovers quickly if something fails. Fault tolerance = the system keeps running even if something fails. They're different concepts, and the exam tests them.
Free resources for the CLF-C02
- ▸AWS Skill Builder (skillbuilder.aws): AWS's free official course for the Cloud Practitioner. It's the most up-to-date resource and is available in several languages.
- ▸AWS Free Tier (aws.amazon.com/free): create an account and explore the console with the free credits. Getting hands-on with the services really helps you understand them.
- ▸CLF-C02 interactive labs: practice in a simulation of the AWS console, with no account of your own and no risk of charges.
Can I pass it without technical experience?
Yes. The CLF-C02 is designed to include non-technical profiles like sales, finance, or project management who work with AWS teams. However, without any technical context you'll need more than 30 days — plan on 6–8 weeks.
