SAP-C02 practice exam: AWS Solutions Architect Professional exam guide
Official domains, format, cost, and study strategy for the SAP-C02, AWS’s most demanding professional exam. The Brains4Cloud guide, deep dive, and practice exam.
The SAP-C02 (AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional) is AWS's most demanding architecture certification. It doesn't assess individual services but your ability to design, migrate, and optimize complex, multi-account architectures — it's the exam that separates people who know AWS from those who master it at the organizational level.
What you need to know about the exam
| Questions | 75 (multiple choice and multiple response, long cases) |
| Duration | 180 minutes |
| Reference cost | USD 300 |
| Passing score | 750 out of 1000 (scaled) |
| Validity | 3 years |
| Prerequisites | None formally; AWS recommends 2+ years of hands-on experience designing on AWS |
Official domains and their weight
| Domain | Approximate weight |
|---|---|
| Design solutions for organizational complexity | 26% |
| Design for new solutions | 29% |
| Continuous improvement for existing solutions | 25% |
| Accelerate workload migration and modernization | 20% |
Reference weights from AWS's public blueprint (4 domains, with no separate cost block — cost optimization is now built into continuous improvement and new solution design). Confirm the current version before your exam.
The cases usually combine several services, multiple AWS accounts (Organizations, Control Tower), and simultaneous cost, compliance, and availability constraints — there are no "single-service" questions.
Common mistakes that make people fail
- ▸Insufficient preparation for multi-account scenarios. AWS Organizations, Control Tower, and landing zone strategies come up constantly, and many candidates only studied single-account architectures.
- ▸Not mastering migration strategies. The 7 Rs of migration (rehost, replatform, refactor, etc.) and tools like AWS Application Migration Service (MGN) and DMS make up a whole block of the exam.
- ▸Underestimating the time. 180 minutes is long, but so are the cases — without timed practice, it's easy to rush through the last 15-20 questions.

If you don't have the SAA-C03 yet, it's the most recommended unofficial prerequisite — check out our SAA-C03 guide before jumping to the professional level.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the SAA-C03 before the SAP-C02? It's not mandatory, but without that foundation (or equivalent experience) the SAP-C02 is considerably harder to tackle.
How long should I study? With a recent SAA-C03 and hands-on experience, 8-10 weeks. It's one of the certifications you should least rush.
Is it worth the cost? For senior cloud architecture roles, it's one of the certifications with the best return — it validates real experience, not just theory, and it's recognized in the market as a benchmark of seniority.
