When you decide to get AWS certified, the first question is inevitable: do I start with the Cloud Practitioner or go straight to the Solutions Architect Associate?

The answer depends on your experience and your goal. We'll explain it without beating around the bush.

What is the AWS Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02)?

The CLF-C02 is AWS's foundational-level certification. It assesses:

  • ▸Conceptual understanding of AWS services
  • ▸The shared responsibility model
  • ▸Pricing models and support plans
  • ▸Basic use cases for the main services

It requires no prior technical experience. It's designed even for non-technical profiles who work in AWS environments.

Preparation time: 3–6 weeks Price: USD 100 Exam duration: 90 minutes, 65 questions Validity: 3 years

What is the AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03)?

The SAA-C03 is an associate-level certification, significantly more technical. It assesses:

  • ▸Designing secure, resilient, and high-performing architectures on AWS
  • ▸Choosing the right services for specific scenarios
  • ▸Cost optimization in real architectures
  • ▸Migrating applications to AWS

It requires hands-on experience with AWS — it isn't theoretical. The questions are complex scenarios involving multiple services.

Preparation time: 2–4 months Price: USD 150 Exam duration: 130 minutes, 65 questions Validity: 3 years

Can I skip the CLF-C02 and go straight to the SAA-C03?

Technically, yes. AWS doesn't require the CLF-C02 as a prerequisite for the SAA-C03. But there's an important reason to consider the order:

The SAA-C03 assumes you already understand the fundamentals of the AWS ecosystem: which services exist, how accounts are organized, what a VPC is, how IAM works. Without that foundation, the SAA-C03's architecture questions are hard to interpret because you don't understand the context.

People who take the CLF-C02 first arrive at the SAA-C03 with a real advantage in understanding — even if the total preparation time is longer.

💡 The exception: if you already have 1–2 years of experience working directly with AWS in a technical role (developer, sysops, DevOps), you can go straight to the SAA-C03. Your hands-on experience replaces what the CLF-C02 teaches in theory.

Which one does the job market ask for?

There's an important difference in the market value of each certification:

  • ▸CLF-C02: a signal that you understand cloud. Useful for getting into support, technical sales, or junior roles on cloud teams. It's usually not enough for engineering roles.
  • ▸SAA-C03: one of the most sought-after certifications in cloud job postings. If a posting says "AWS Certified is a plus", it almost always means Solutions Architect or higher.

For a career change toward technical cloud roles, the end goal should be the SAA-C03 — the CLF-C02 is the first step on the path.

The recommended path based on your profile

Profile with no technical experience:

CLF-C02 → hands-on AWS experience (3–6 months) → SAA-C03

Profile with IT experience but new to AWS:

CLF-C02 (3–4 weeks) → SAA-C03 (2–3 months)

Profile with real AWS experience:

Straight to the SAA-C03

Is the CLF-C02 worth it if I already know I want the SAA-C03?

Yes, for three reasons:

  1. ▸

The 50% discount: passing the CLF-C02 gets you a 50% voucher for your next AWS exam. The SAA-C03 costs USD 150 — with the discount you pay USD 75. Both certifications come to USD 175 in total, just USD 25 more than the SAA-C03 alone at full price.

  2. ▸

The conceptual foundation: the CLF-C02 teaches you AWS's vocabulary and logic. Arriving at the SAA-C03 with that context cuts your preparation time.

  3. ▸

Confidence: passing an AWS exam, even a foundational one, gives you the confidence to face the SAA-C03 with a better mindset.
