General Concepts

Vertical scaling (Scale up)

Definition

Increasing an existing server's capacity by adding more CPU, RAM, or storage. It has a physical ceiling and generally requires downtime.

Exam context

Cloud exams contrast this with scale out. Scale up hits a maximum hardware limit and can involve downtime. On RDS (AWS) or Azure SQL, changing the database tier is scale up.
