What is the Terraform Associate (004) certification and who is it for
Everything you need to know about HashiCorp’s Terraform Associate certification: what it assesses, who should take it, and why it’s among the most in-demand in DevOps and cloud.
If you work in DevOps, cloud engineering, or infrastructure, you've probably already heard of Terraform. But if you don't have the official certification yet, you may be wondering: is it worth it? Is it hard? Who is it really for?
In this article we explain exactly what the Terraform Associate certification is, what it assesses, and whether it makes sense for you.
What is Terraform?
Before talking about the certification, some quick context: Terraform is an Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tool developed by HashiCorp. Instead of creating cloud resources manually from the Azure, AWS, or GCP console, with Terraform you describe your infrastructure in code files and the tool creates it automatically.
It's the de facto standard for cloud infrastructure management in modern DevOps teams. If a team uses AWS, Azure, or GCP professionally, there's a very high chance it also uses Terraform.
What is the Terraform Associate certification?
The HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate (004) is HashiCorp's official certification that validates your ability to use Terraform in your day-to-day professional work. Version 004 replaced 003 and adds more current topics like HCP Terraform and ephemeral values. It's a vendor-neutral certification — it isn't tied to AWS, Azure, or GCP. It works the same with every cloud provider.
Key exam facts:
- ▸Reference price: USD 70.50
- ▸Duration: 60 minutes
- ▸Questions: 57, multiple choice
- ▸Result: pass/fail (HashiCorp doesn't publish a scaled score)
- ▸Validity: 2 years
- ▸Format: online proctored, from home
The Terraform Associate is noticeably cheaper than the major cloud providers' certifications. At USD 70.50, it's one of the best value-for-money options on the tech certification market.
What does the exam assess?
The 004 exam covers the fundamental concepts and practical use of Terraform:
| Domain | Main content |
|---|---|
| IaC and Terraform's purpose | Benefits of IaC, Terraform vs other tools, multi-cloud |
| Core workflow | init, plan, apply, destroy |
| Providers and configuration | HCL, providers, resources, data sources |
| Variables, outputs, and expressions | Variables, outputs, functions, sensitive and ephemeral values |
| Modules | Public and custom modules, versioning |
| State management | Remote backends, locking, import, drift |
| Advanced CLI and HCP Terraform | Advanced commands, remote workspaces, Sentinel policies |
Unlike the previous version, 004 dedicates a full block to HCP Terraform (formerly called Terraform Cloud). It's still the practical level of an engineer who uses Terraform in their daily work, not an advanced administration exam.
Who is this certification for?
The Terraform Associate is ideal if:
- ▸You're a Cloud Engineer or DevOps and use, or want to use, Terraform in your work
- ▸You're a sysadmin and want to move toward more modern cloud infrastructure roles
- ▸You're a developer working on teams that manage their own infrastructure (DevOps)
- ▸You have the AZ-900 or CLF-C02 and want to add a high-value vendor-neutral certification
It's not ideal if you've never worked with cloud or if you're looking for your first certification — in that case, start with the AZ-900 or CLF-C02.
Why is the Terraform Associate in such demand?
Three concrete reasons:
1. It's vendor-neutral: unlike Azure or AWS certifications, Terraform works with every cloud provider. A company that migrates from AWS to GCP doesn't lose its investment in a Terraform-certified team.
2. A shortage of certified professionals: there are lots of people with Azure and AWS certifications, but relatively few with Terraform. That means less competition and more value in the job market.
3. The market actively asks for it: search for "DevOps Engineer" on LinkedIn and count how many postings mention Terraform. It's one of the most requested skills in cloud infrastructure roles.
Do I need prior cloud experience to take it?
It isn't a formal requirement, but having hands-on experience with at least one cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP) before attempting the Terraform Associate is highly recommended. Without understanding what a VPC, a VM, or an S3 bucket is, Terraform exercises have no context.
The recommended path:
AZ-900 or CLF-C02
↓
Real practice with the Azure portal or AWS console (2–3 months)
↓
Terraform Associate
How much time do I need to prepare?
| Prior experience | Estimated time |
|---|---|
| No cloud experience | Not recommended yet |
| Cloud fundamentals (AZ-900 or CLF-C02) | 6–10 weeks |
| Engineer with cloud experience | 3–5 weeks |
| DevOps already using Terraform | 1–2 weeks of review |
