CDL
Deep Dive
Google Cloud's differential advantages, global network, sustainability, cloud models, and comparison with other providers. Fundamentals for the CDL exam.
Contents
Google Cloud isn't just another cloud provider — it has structural advantages based on decades of building the world's largest infrastructure.
The world's largest private network
Google operates one of the most extensive private fiber optic networks on the planet, with submarine cables connecting every continent. When a user accesses a Google Cloud service, the traffic travels over Google's private network from the nearest point of presence to the datacenter — never over the public internet.
Impact for the customer
Latency up to 40% lower than competitors for global traffic. More consistent and reliable.
For the exam
Google's private network is a real competitive advantage, not marketing.
Leadership in AI and Machine Learning
Google created TensorFlow (the most widely used ML framework), invented the Transformer architecture that underlies all modern LLMs (GPT, Gemini), developed TPUs (Tensor Processing Units) — chips designed specifically for ML — and has Gemini, one of the most advanced multimodal models.
Impact for the customer
Vertex AI accesses AI infrastructure that no other provider can match (proprietary TPUs, Gemini models).
For the exam
Google has an AI advantage from years of basic research and proprietary chips (TPUs).
Leadership in data and analytics
BigQuery processes more than 110 petabytes of data per day for customers worldwide. Google invented the foundational big data technologies: MapReduce (inspired Hadoop), Bigtable (inspired Cassandra/HBase), and Dremel (the base technology of BigQuery). Looker is the most advanced enterprise BI platform on the market.
Impact for the customer
The most mature data ecosystem: BigQuery + Looker + Vertex AI is an unmatched stack.
For the exam
For analytics and data at scale, GCP has the most optimized architecture.
Security by design
Google designed its infrastructure with security from the ground up, not as an afterthought. The Titan chip verifies boot integrity on every server. BeyondCorp eliminated the internal VPN at Google in 2011 — Google employees do not use a VPN to access internal systems. Zero Trust is part of Google's DNA.
Impact for the customer
The same security infrastructure that protects Gmail and YouTube protects your workloads.
For the exam
BeyondCorp = Zero Trust = access based on identity and context, not network location.
Leader in sustainability
Google was the first major tech company to offset its carbon emissions (2007). Google buys more renewable energy than any other company in the world. Goal to operate on carbon-free energy 24/7 by 2030. Google datacenters use 50% less energy than an average datacenter.
Impact for the customer
For organizations with ESG mandates, GCP offers industry-leading sustainability credentials.
For the exam
Carbon Footprint Dashboard on GCP shows the real environmental impact of your workloads.
Google operates one of the largest and most advanced network systems in the world. This includes more than 100,000 miles of fiber optic cable (including its own intercontinental submarine cable), more than 1,600 points of presence in more than 200 countries, and an interconnection network that carries a significant percentage of the world's internet traffic.
Global latency
Traffic travels over Google's private network from the Edge to the datacenter. Fewer hops = less latency.
Hot potato routing
Traffic enters Google's network as soon as possible and leaves as late as possible — reduces costs and latency.
Cold potato routing
Alternative where other ISPs carry the traffic longer — more latency for the end user.
Anycast IP
A single global IP for Cloud Load Balancing that automatically routes to the nearest datacenter.
2007
Carbon neutral
Google was the first major tech company to offset 100% of its carbon emissions.
2017
100% renewable energy
Google matched 100% of its global electricity consumption with renewable energy purchases.
2030
Goal: 24/7 carbon-free
Operate on carbon-free energy in real time, at every datacenter, 24 hours a day.
Carbon Footprint Dashboard
Google Cloud provides a dashboard that shows the real carbon impact of your workloads on GCP. Customers with ESG mandates can report that their GCP workloads run on a % of renewable energy, contributing to their corporate sustainability goals.
| Model | Description | When to use it | Google solution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public cloud | Shared cloud resources, owned and operated by Google. Accessed over the internet. | Most workloads. Best TCO, scalability, and access to managed services. | Google Cloud Platform (GCP) |
| Private cloud | Cloud infrastructure dedicated to a single organization. On-premises or in a dedicated datacenter. | Ultra-sensitive data, regulations requiring data to be physically on-premises. | Google Distributed Cloud (GCP hardware in your datacenter) |
| Hybrid cloud | Combination of public and private cloud with connectivity between both. | Gradual migration, sensitive data on-prem + cloud-native apps on GCP. | GKE + Google Distributed Cloud + Cloud Interconnect/VPN |
| Multi-cloud | Using services from multiple cloud providers simultaneously. | Avoiding vendor lock-in, using the best service from each provider, mergers. | GKE Multi-Cloud + BigQuery Omni |
Note about the exam
The CDL does not ask about AWS or Azure — it's all Google Cloud. However, understanding the differences helps you understand why GCP makes certain design decisions.
| Dimension | AWS | Azure | Google Cloud |
|---|---|---|---|
| Network | Multi-region over Internet | ExpressRoute for private | Global private network by default |
| AI/ML | SageMaker + Bedrock (external models) | Azure ML + OpenAI partnership | Proprietary TPUs + Gemini + Vertex AI |
| Data | Redshift + many separate services | Synapse + Fabric | Unified BigQuery + Looker |
| VPC | VPC per region, not global | VNet per region | VPC is GLOBAL — the key difference |
| VM pricing | Per hour, Reserved or Spot | Similar to AWS | Per minute + automatic SUD with no commitment |
| Open source | Uses OSS but creates proprietary services | Strong in .NET and Windows | Created Kubernetes, TensorFlow, Istio |
| Sustainability | Goal 100% RE by 2025 | Carbon negative by 2030 | Carbon neutral since 2007, 24/7 RE by 2030 |
