Storage Account — the container for everything

What is a Storage Account?

A Storage Account is the top-level container for all Azure storage services (Blob, Files, Queues, Tables). It defines the redundancy level, region, performance type, and access controls for all storage within it.

Storage Account types

Standard (GPv2): General purpose v2. Supports Blob, Files, Queues, Tables. HDD. The recommended default option.
Premium Blob: Blob only. SSD. For Blob with many small operations and low latency.
Premium Files: File Shares only. SSD. For file sharing with high IOPS.
Premium Block Blobs: Block Blobs only. SSD. For high-speed streaming and IoT workloads.

Globally unique name

The Storage Account name must be globally unique in Azure (3-24 characters, lowercase letters and numbers only). Because it's part of the endpoint URL:

Blob: myaccount.blob.core.windows.net
Files: myaccount.file.core.windows.net
Queue: myaccount.queue.core.windows.net
Table: myaccount.table.core.windows.net

Azure Blob Storage in depth

Azure's object storage service. For unstructured data: images, videos, backups, logs, ML data.

Block Blobs

The most common type. Optimized for text and binary data. Splits the file into blocks and uploads them in parallel. Maximum 190.7 TB per blob.

Typical use

Images, videos, documents, backups, ML datasets

Append Blobs

Optimized for append operations (adding to the end). Perfect for logs where you always add lines at the end. Cannot be modified or deleted in the middle.

Typical use

Application logs, audit logs, continuous telemetry

Page Blobs

Optimized for random read/write access. Composed of 512-byte pages. Low latency. Used internally for VM VHDs.

Typical use

VM OS Disks and Data Disks (Managed Disks use Page Blobs internally)

Access Tiers — cost vs access frequency

TierStorage costAccess costAccess latencyMinimum durationUse case
Hot$0.018/GB/monthLowmsNoneFrequently accessed active data
Cool$0.01/GB/monthMediumms30 daysOccasionally accessed data (recent backups)
Cold$0.0045/GB/monthHighms90 daysRarely accessed data but available in ms
Archive$0.001/GB/monthVery high + rehydrationHours180 daysLong-term archive, extremely rarely accessed data

Important: Archive is not immediate access

To read data in Archive, you must first "rehydrate" the blob to Hot or Cool. Reactivation time: Standard priority ~15h, High priority ~1h. Data in Archive still exists but you can't read it directly.

Lifecycle Management — automates the tiers

Define rules to move blobs between tiers automatically based on age or last access.

Rule: "Archive log data"
IF: blob created more than 30 days ago → move to Cool
IF: blob created more than 90 days ago → move to Cold
IF: blob created more than 365 days ago → move to Archive
IF: blob created more than 7 years ago → delete

Azure Files, Queue Storage, and Table Storage

Azure Files

Cloud file sharing via SMB (Server Message Block) or NFS. Mounts as a network drive on Windows, Linux, or macOS.

ProtocolSMB 3.0 / NFS 4.1
Mounted onWindows (Z:\), Linux (/mnt/share), macOS
Max size100 TB per share
Use casesSharing config between VMs, migrating file servers, user profiles

Azure File Sync: synchronizes on-premises file servers with Azure Files. Local cache + cloud storage.

Queue Storage

Message queue for asynchronous communication between application components. One component places messages on the queue; another consumes them at its own pace.

Message sizeUp to 64 KB
Retention timeUp to 7 days (configurable)
ThroughputThousands of messages/second
Use casesDecoupling microservices, work queues, retry patterns

For advanced enterprise messaging (ordering, dead-letter, topics) → Azure Service Bus.

Table Storage

Structured NoSQL key-value storage. Schema-less (each row can have different columns). Economical for large volumes of semi-structured data.

ModelKey-value / NoSQL
Entity sizeUp to 1 MB
ScalabilityPBs of data
Use casesNon-relational user data, structured logs, catalogs

For advanced NoSQL with global distribution and multiple APIs → Azure Cosmos DB.

Databases: SQL vs NoSQL in Azure

Azure SQL Database (Relational / PaaS)

Fully managed SQL Server in Azure. Microsoft applies patches, automatic backups, high availability, and maintenance. You only manage the data and schema.

Single Database: A standalone database with dedicated resources. Simple.
Elastic Pool: Multiple databases share resources. Economical when loads are variable.
Managed Instance: Full SQL Server instance in Azure. 100% compatible with on-prem SQL Server. For migrations.

Other relational databases in Azure

Azure Database for PostgreSQL

Managed PostgreSQL. The Flexible Server version is the recommended one. Compatible with standard PostgreSQL.

Azure Database for MySQL

Managed MySQL. Popular for LAMP apps. Compatible with standard MySQL.

Azure Database for MariaDB

Managed MariaDB. For apps that specifically require MariaDB.

Azure Cache for Redis

Managed Redis. In-memory store. For session caching, rate limiting, leaderboards. Up to 1M operations/second.

Cosmos DB — the global multi-model database

What makes Cosmos DB unique?

Native global distribution

Automatically replicates to any Azure region with a single click. Data close to your users anywhere in the world.

99.999% SLA (5 nines)

The highest availability SLA in Azure. For applications that CANNOT tolerate downtime.

Guaranteed < 10ms latency

For both reads and writes at p99. Guaranteed by SLA (unique in the industry).

Multi-model

A single service with 5 APIs: SQL/Core, MongoDB, Cassandra, Table, Gremlin (graphs).

Consistency levels (the central trade-off)

StrongAll reads see the latest write. Maximum consistency. Higher latency.
Bounded StalenessReads lag by X versions or T seconds. Balanced.
SessionDefault. Consistency within a client session. Best for single-user apps.
Consistent PrefixReads never see writes out of order.
EventualNo ordering guarantees. Maximum performance. Lowest consistency.

When to use Cosmos DB vs Azure SQL

Use Cosmos DB when:

  • Global app with users on multiple continents
  • Variable data structure (flexible schema)
  • 99.999% SLA is a requirement
  • You need MongoDB/Cassandra/Gremlin APIs
  • IoT: millions of writes/second

Use Azure SQL when:

  • Structured data with fixed schema (ACID)
  • Complex SQL queries with JOINs
  • Regional app (no need for global distribution)
  • Tight budget (Cosmos DB is more expensive)
  • Team already knows SQL and T-SQL

For

40–800 TB of data that would take months to upload over the internet

Azure Database Migration Service

Migrates SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB databases to Azure with minimal downtime. Can do online migration (real-time replication) or offline.

For

Migrating databases with minimal or zero downtime
